Handicrafts: A Genuine Work of Art
Mohammad Hammoud (9A)
“Crafts make us feel rooted, give us a sense of belonging and connect us with our history.” This quote highlights and alludes that crafts, which are inherited and passed down from previous generations, represent our history, our identity, and our bond to the past, to our present and the future. Hence, it’s important to respect and safeguard all cultural heritage including handicrafts. In fact, handicrafts are vital assets for several reasons counting social and economic ones.
It goes without saying that handicrafts are important socially as they promote one’s cultural heritage and build values of perseverance. To start with, preserving handicrafts is a way to know about specific traditions, art, heritage, skills, and talents that are associated with people’s lifestyles and history of a particular place or region. For instance, items like rugs, jewelry, and hand-carved wood ceramics all represent the identity of the people who made them and give a window into their lives and lifestyles. Another social reason is that they help build values of perseverance as they require patience to overcome technological development that has replaced humans with machines due to their speed and accuracy. For example, Artisans are careful to select rare and outstanding materials that they treat attentively by hand to produce special items.
Yet another essential reason for
preserving handicrafts is the economic one that helps people overcome unemployment
and improve the country financially. To
start with, handicrafts have provided a lot of people with vacancies and
opportunities for employment. For example. In India, handicrafts are produced in
small workshops run by more than 100 people. Not to mention, the importance of
handicrafts has increased due to their financial value. In countries such as Iran
handicrafts are a major source of foreign earnings since tourists during their
touristic voyage buy samples of their fascinating handmade fabric.
In conclusion, crafts have the
potential to boost any country’s economy and to give people a clear insight
into a different culture. In an
attempt to preserve these crafts, the government and people should present
their products on a stall in replicas of old souks and compose exhibits in
places like Biel and Expo Beirut where craftsmen can practice their skills.
