Nursing Homes: Preserving Our Treasures
“The wisdom and experience of older people is a resource of inestimable worth. Recognizing and treasuring the contributions of older people is essential to long-term flourishing.” This quote alludes the significance of valuing and caring for the elderly, for their knowledge, wisdom, and expertise in life make them as valuable as a golden treasure, if not more. It is of utmost importance to look after their health, comfort and happiness, in any way possible. According to me, one ought to consider a residential home as a means of providing the elderly with assistance and care, due to the myriad benefits that can be physical and social.

To begin with, the most obvious advantage of placing a loved one in a nursing home is that there is continual care available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In fact, nursing homes greatly promote old people’s physical wellbeing. Staying active throughout life is the key to boosting and maintaining one’s health. That said, as a person ages, their ability to exercise safely and effectively can diminish, and sedentary lifestyle becomes increasingly common. That’s why physical therapy implemented in a nursing home contains major significance. According to the US corporation and website, Medium, elderly people in nursing homes often struggle with age-related bodily limitations, like poor eyesight, heart diseases, and more. Such factors contribute to a greater risk of falling. This is a major issue that physical therapists help to address with exercise programs for nursing home residents. Seniors are taught to carefully walk straight lines and to maintain balance while shifting their body weight, as well as to stand on a surface as the support area is gradually reduced. These simple nursing home exercise ideas can genuinely guard them against potentially debilitating injuries and reduce the discomfort and paranoia rooted in a variety of conditions. This allows elderly people to stay mobile and safe for a longer period of time. In addition, a handful of studies have systematically investigated the association between physical activity and cognitive function, reporting that physically active subjects were 50% less likely to have brain impairment. It is also indicated that the importance of activities in long term care relates to both physical and mental-psychological welfare, as exercise has been shown to have a very positive impact on the mental health of older adults; through offering them relief as to the fear of acquiring injuries, and through inducing biological phenomena like the release of certain mood-lifting hormones.
On a social basis, residential care homes provide lots of options and organized events for residents who are able to participate. Without having to leave the facility, patients can do crafts and art projects, attend various gatherings, play games, or even go to the gym. Some nursing homes even have swimming pools. Such activities allow the elderly to bond with their peers over shared interests, and develop friendships – some even turning to romantic relationships! In a study titled “Perceptions and Experiences of Elderly Residents in Asylum” published on the Brazilian website SciELO, conducted in the city of Patos de Minas, 14 persons were interviewed and surveyed for the purpose of analyzing the perception of the elderly on their living conditions in a nursing home, located in the state of Minas Gerais. While some showed a general state of loneliness and longing, a second theme was found as seen in some of the people’s statements. “I love living here in the residential home; I am happy and want to get out of here only when I die”, said Valmir. “I like everyone here, and I consider that I have friends”. Another resident, Damiao, stated, “living here for me is like getting out of hell from the farm to the skies. I do not participate in the village’s events, but I get along with people here.” Paulina similarly indicated that she has many friends there, whereas Marta said she likes it because she has peace.

As a conclusion, residential homes are recognizably vital when it comes to physical and social support of the elderly. I urge the ministry of social affairs in addition to the governmental institutions to prioritize working on Seniors Homes construction as well as service surveillance as a means of protecting the elderly citizens and guaranteeing a decent life for them.
