“Elimination
of illiteracy is as serious an issue to our history as the abolition of slavery.”
This quote by Maya Angelou affirms the importance of excluding illiteracy out
of societies. But in order
to truly solve any problem, its roots must be pulled first. Illiteracy
is caused by multiple social and mental factors which affect the social and
health domains, so serious measures must be taken to overcome this issue.
To
commence the argument, it has become widely known how much influence on the
subject of illiteracy poverty has become. For the lack of literacy is directly
connected to not even being able to receive a proper education, be it because of
the lack of economic resources or the absence of schools or even the inability
for the parents to teach their kids. To explain, it is estimated that there are more than one hundred twenty-four million primary
or secondary school-aged children who are not in school around the world. Most
of these children are located in poor countries, mostly in Africa, but
surprisingly a large portion of them are present in developed countries such as
the U.S. As statistics show that 1 in 5 children in the US lives in poverty and
illiteracy. This leads to child labor. According to the International Labor
Organization(ILO), more than 200 million children today are child laborers. An
estimated 120 million are engaged in hazardous work; 73 million of these
children are below 10 years old. This problem is
primarily solved economically; by reducing education cost or providing free
education even if it was via late night classes, and in case of slightly older
kids, charity campaigns can be held to provide a library of free donated books.
On the other side of the spectrum, sometimes illiteracy
is not born with someone but rather developed through disabilities coupled with
social pressure. To clarify, there has been a number of very “dangerous”
diseases that prevent them from proper education such as APD (Auditory
Processing Disability), Dyscalculia, Dyslexia, and ADD (Attention Deficit
Disorder). Statistics show that in 2012 approximately 6.4 million children
suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) around the ages
four to seventeen. So far it is estimated that 256000 of these children have
not received any type of treatment-disregarding failed treatments-which is
embarrassing on account of the fact that about twenty-three percent of children
suffering from ADHD are in the USA; where about half of all treatment
facilities are located. Of course, parents try to teach their children to work
around the problem and learn alternate, easier ways. But those who receive
normal treatment, especially kids in schools are often mocked and bullied for
their low achievements academically and sometimes for their involuntary actions
such as stuttering and twitches. And these teasings
on a constant basis affect the kid’s psychological state and bring down his
expectations for himself and make him or she sees themselves lower than they are
in society. This eventually leads to the kid to surrender to his disability
and give up tuition as a whole. There[G1 have also been some counters to this
problem such as specific diets to increase the number of specific hormones that
improve a patient’s attention span and some drugs that are being manufactured.
But the most effective suggested solutions are creating special schools with a
unique curriculum specific for these disabilities.
To summarize, illiteracy is a major obstacle that holds
back humanity from thriving together as one in terms of relations, knowledge,
and responsibility towards special needs kids. It is a problem caused by high
education fees, ignorance, disabilities, and society carelessness. And despite
the obvious solutions created to counter this problem, significant results have
not been made. So, this opens the question; are these solutions
really effective and for a humanitarian cause, or are they yet another business
hiding behind the mask of good will?
