Homeschooling: The Future’s Education
“When the atmosphere encourages learning, the learning is inevitable.” This quote asserts and alludes that when your locality and whereabouts while learning is inspirational, motivational and stimulating, education is undeniable and in the bag. Well, I believe that homeschooling provides the perfect area for one to study in, the idea is to educate, not to follow anyone’s schedule about when something should be studied. From my point of view, homeschooling equips high educational level, psychological relaxation, and social communication.
To begin with, homeschooling or in other words, home education, has a great effect on the country’s educational level. All around the world, in every nation and in every school, students have different thoughts, different dreams, and different abilities. Homeschooling, through giving everyone’s talent its right, escalates his/her will to study and achieve more. According to a study that compared students at one doctoral university from 2004-2009, students coming from a homeschool graduated college at a higher rate than their peers-66.7 percent compared to 57.5 percent-and earned higher grade point averages along the way. For instance, supporters of the homeschooling movement point out that homeschooled students tend to perform above the national average on SAT(Scholastic Aptitude Test; 72 points higher) and ACT tests(American College Testing; the average score is 21 and homeschoolers test out at 22.8 out of 36 points).
Moreover, homeschooling provides a peaceful medium for students away from exam phobia and depression from bullying. To illustrate, homeschoolers do not have the same exposure to peer pressure and bullying, both of which tied to poorer academic performance and lower self-esteem. A great example for that is the singer and former Disney star Demi Lovato who began her academic career in public school but left due to bullying. The move ended up working out for Lovato, who has managed to remain in the spotlight despite a few hiccups. In 2008, Lovato reflected back on her decision to leave school in favor of homeschooling. Another brilliant example is Christina Aguilera. After appearing as a child on Star Search and Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club, Christina returned to her public school only to face merciless teasing by her peers. In ninth grade, Christina’s parents finally allowed her to be homeschooled. Shortly after completing high school, Christina wrote the song “Reflection” for the Mulan soundtrack.
Furthermore, homeschooling also helps in being socially engaged by providing time to do more activities. Homeschooling gives more time for one to spend with his /her family, friends, to do outdoor activities or even to practice their talents and pursue their dreams. It’s common among a lot of people that homeschoolers end up spending less time each day participating in organized sports and activities with their peers and have no ability to social interaction with others outside their family. In fact, on average, homeschoolers participate more in their community, are less sedentary, and socialize with a wider mix of adults than their public school counterparts. For example, despite being the daughter of country music legend Billy Ray Cyrus, singer and actress Miley Cyrus enjoyed a relatively normal existence until she became a household name as Disney Channel star Hannah Montana. Between acting and singing, Cyrus was so busy that she began homeschooling as a way to better manage her time. With the help of tutors, Cyrus was even able to graduate ahead of schedule.
As a conclusion, it seems to me that homeschooling affords platform of opportunities for various students to achieve their goals in life by affording the better educational system, psychological pleasure, and social interaction. I maintain that one should support his/her children’s dreams and speculations through homeschooling for what it can supply for one in order to buckle down, explore all avenues and lay the foundation. Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve, isn’t it now the time to give them their freedom to be who they truly are and teach them how to think instead of what to?
