Superstition: A Mind Stalker
Lynn Shehab (9B)

“Superstition, the mother of those hideous twins, fear and faith, from her throne of skulls, still rules the world”. This quote asserts and proclaims that superstitions clog, fetter, shackle, and manacle people’s competency to flourish and thrive their intellect. Superstitions are old traditions and rituals that lack logical explanation; they’re mere presumptions that linger in our contemporary world despite the logical and scientific reasoning. In fact, one cannot lose sight of the negativity accompanied by superstitions. Superstitions, a piece of fiction dealings, encapsulates a plethora of drawbacks on the social, physical, and academic aspects.

To begin with, superstitions hold a bunch of social drawbacks, for it prevents logical thinking and precludes adequate decision making. To start with, being affected by it, superstitions blind man’s power of rational judgment. For example, people generally hate losing more than they like winning. People will take significant risks to avoid losing money but will not accept the same amount of risk in hopes of receiving a windfall. This phenomenon is called loss aversion. People become more risk-seeking in gains but more risk-averse when facing losses. Moreover, superstitions obviate taking wise decisions; it reveals that the worst kind of sin in this world is knowing everything, knowing that something is wrong and remaining quiet while you can raise your voice against it. As an example, Sami, a grade 9 superstitious student considers his friend an ideal, whatever he does, wrong or right, he’s perfect.

Furthermore, superstitions encapsulate a plethora of academic disadvantages since it deteriorates the scholar results and harms the education system. To start with, superstitions descends one’s scholar results; it fills the students’ heads with lies and busies their mind with dim-witted beliefs. Instead of becoming nerds at schools, students are transforming to be the prisoners of mythical thoughts. For instance, Lara, a high school student who’s mind was mugged up by superstitions absented herself from school because of some stupid beliefs which lowered her grades. Also, superstitions damage the education system for it exerts negative influence in children (and even teachers!) learning from science; these beliefs are often held tenaciously and tend to impede an individual’s conceptualization of scientific knowledge by creating an existing prior knowledge which is in contrast to science, knowledge to be learned. As an example, studies were done on identification and analysis of types and degrees of superstitions beliefs have been reported as well as to how these beliefs inhibit the individual learning from science and that’s how the schooling system is harmed.

Added to that, this strange phenomenon encapsulates a myriad of negative effects such as causing self-harm and committing suicide. To begin with, superstitions are the ghost itself for it be the reason behind self-cutting, scratching, neglecting self-care...all interfere with one to harm himself/herself. For instance, in Taiwanese culture, the seventh lunar month is called Ghost Month; during this period, the gates of the afterlife are opened and ghosts roam the living world. Hospitals are regarded as places where life and death are connected. Thus, believers avoid visiting hospitals and doing surgeries during Ghost Month. Also, vesting suicide may occur when one is addicted to superstitions. Beliefs about death, superstitious beliefs, and health anxiety are strongly associated. For example, Rami, a superstitious crank believed that birds held to be messengers to the afterlife because of their ability to soar through the air to the home of God, he associated birds with death, then suicide was applied.

In a nutshell, superstitions, the feature of obsessive-compulsive disorders, boils down a bunch of cataclysmic effects on the social, physical, and academic domains and leads one to give fear the green light to boss his/her life where he/she will lose the felicity of life. Superstitions are well known as fiction dealings. Then, we are able to predict a future if delusions continue to develop. Fortunetellers are most likely to have more salary than doctors, and the only perfect medicine will be the horseshoe or a four-leaf clover. if people were rational and wise enough and well educated and encouraged to develop a scientific attitude, there is no doubt that superstitions will die a natural death.
