Sports: The Deleterious Zone

“Practicing sports which can be fully advantageous may not turn to be so if it doesn’t serve its goals of keeping our bodies healthy and promoting feelings of friendliness, cooperation, and peace.” This quote portrays and proclaims that sports may entail disadvantages if we deviate from the prime targets at which sports pursue. In fact, one cannot lose sight of the dark side of sports. If truth to be told, sports, the felled key to success, encapsulate a plethora of detrimental impacts that fall into the social, psychological and physical domains.

To begin with, sports entail a myriad of drawbacks on the social field such as suffering from press chase and growing hooliganism. To start off, when an athlete becomes popular, people have the favor to dive in his life be it personal or social. So, as result journalists find it an exploitative method to improve their work through collecting news about this athlete. For instance, an American football player started achieving high success in his team which pushed people to know more about him and then journalists started researching and going deep into his personal life. Moreover, sports involve competitions between two teams, and each team has its own fans. Then, after the match, the fans of the loser team will be interacting by the result which sometimes may lead to the born of hooligans who will start a violent scene. For example, the first recorded instances of football hooliganism in the modern game allegedly occurred during the 1880s in England, a period when gangs of supporters would intimidate neighborhoods, in addition to attacking referees, opposing supporters and players.

Furthermore, sports encompass a plethora of disadvantages on the psychological domain such as inflating the player’s ego and leading to depression. To begin with, if a person is a good athlete, it may inflate his/her ego or make them feel superior to others. This can affect the athlete’s personality in a negative way and affect his/her relationships with others. For instance, Zlatan Ibrahimović, the man with so many tricks, calls himself Abracadabra, and when offered a trial at Arsenal as a teenager, he told Arsene Wenger that he does not do auditions. This man who after he made a speedy recovery from a potentially career-ending knee injury, said it was because “lions don’t recover like humans”. When he boarded his flight from Manchester to Los Angeles, he might well have needed extra luggage to carry his confidence. Added to that, depression is one of the most common illnesses worldwide, and in recent years the affirmation of depression has increased within the elite athlete population. In fact, a study found that the prevalence rate of depression among college athletes ranges from as low as 15.6% to as high as 21%.

In addition, sports have various negative impacts on the physical field such as being subjected to injuries and enhancing the use of drugs. To start with, injuries go with the territory when you play sports. They can run anywhere from minor muscle pulls and strains right through to broken bones and worse. Sometimes, an injury just won’t go away and keeps recurring, whatever health treatments you go through. In fact, research conducted by Safe Kids Worldwide estimated that 2.6 million athletes, ages 19 and under, are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to sports and recreation each year. For instance, Jaylon Smith, former Notre Dame star linebacker, understands the heartbreak of injury. Smith was projected to be a top-five pick in the 2016 NFL draft before an injury at the Fiesta Bowl caused him to have a knee reconstruction surgery. Moreover, athletes may use drugs to enhance or improve athletic performance, cope with stress, or deal with other career challenges. Drug abuse among athletes is common and can have serious long-term effects, such as arrests, bans from a sport, or overdose. For example, some athletes take a form of steroids known as anabolic-androgenic steroids to increase their muscle mass and strength. But, many athletes take anabolic steroids at doses that are much higher than those prescribed for medical reasons and this would lead to severe acne, liver abnormalities, hypertension, aggressive behaviors, drug dependence and much more.

To sum up with, social, psychological and physical hardships are likely to conquer a wider pace in the presence of ignorance. However, if we consolidate sports manners and raise awareness of the negative outcomes that sports may result in psychologically and keep a keen eye on athletes’ health, consequently we would be able to throw these disadvantages in the trash.
